Superintendent’s Update to Ukiah Unified Families: February 5, 2021

Mendocino County Public Health has approved the Ukiah Unified COVID Safety Plan, and we will know if it is approved by California Safe Schools for All by the beginning of next week. Once our plan is fully approved and our case rate in Mendocino County is under 25 positive cases per 100,000 population, we will begin our phased reopening to in-person instruction.  Our projected phased reopening date is February 16, 2021, for Grades TK - 2, Ages 3 - 22 Special Day Classes, Grade 5 at Eagle Peak, and Grade 6 at Pomolita. This is contingent on local health conditions and approval of our COVID Safety Plan.

During the second week of the gradual reopening projected to start on February 22, 2021, we would open Grades 3 - 6 (including Eagle Peak Grade 6). Grades 7 - 12 are subject to being in the Red Tier. We are not sure when we will be in the Red Tier as a County, so we have not specified a date for reopening Grades 7 - 12. Again, this is contingent on local health conditions and approval of our COVID Safety Plan by the CA Safe Schools for All Team. View the Ukiah Unified COVID Safety Plan on our website.

Watch the Town Hall Meetings and visit the UUSD COVID Response Website to learn more about our phased reopening to a hybrid model, health and safety protocols, mitigation, testing, and more.

New CDPH Mask Guidance

Masks prevent people from getting and spreading COVID-19. Wearing a mask or face covering is now required of every Californian when outside of their home, with limited exceptions. Read more in the new and expanded CDPH mask guidance. Coronavirus spreads when an infected person coughs, sneezes, sings, talks, or breathes within 6 feet of others. Covering your mouth and nose will slow the spread of COVID-19 by limiting the release of virus into the air.  As the guidance says:

  • Put the mask over your nose and mouth and secure it under your chin
  • Fit the mask snugly against the sides of your face, slipping the loops over your ears or tying the strings behind your head
  • Make sure you can breathe easily
  • If you have to continually adjust your mask, it doesn’t fit properly. Try a different mask type or brand.
