Re: Student Accident/ Health Insurance Information
Dear Parent/Legal Guardian:
Student accident insurance is more important than ever. The safety of our students is of critical importance to all of us and we want to protect them from injury. Even so, accidents do happen and out-of-pocket expenses for medical care can be expensive.
Ukiah Unified School District does not provide medical, accident or dental insurance for students injured on school premises or through school activities.
California Education Code Section 49472 authorizes school districts to inform parents or guardians about the availability of student accident and illness insurance to help cover medical expenses in the event of a school-related injury. While our district does not provide this coverage directly, we encourage families to consider purchasing a policy to help protect their child.
There are several low-cost insurance plans available through private providers. These plans are optional, but can provide a peace of mind by covering expenses from injuries that occur during school hours, sports activities or even outside of school. Some well-known providers are K&K Insurance, Pacific Educators, Student Insurance USA, and Gerber Life.
The District provides vendor information for convenience to families. The District does not endorse, recommend, or guarantee any vendor, policy, coverage or claim determination.
Does your child participate on an athletic team?
Under state law, school districts are required to make sure that all members of school athletic teams have accidental injury insurance that covers medical and hospital expenses.
This insurance requirement can be met through a private insurance carried by the family, an independent insurance provider, or the eligibility of the student to enroll in a no-cost or low-cost local, state, or federally sponsored health insurance program.
